chrisette-michele-2 Singer & Songwriter Chrisette Michele has had a tough couple of weeks, and  it all started once people discovered she’d be apart of the Trump Inauguration Performances.   The week leading up to her scheduled performance, several unhappy people popped up on her social media, sharing their disdain for her decision to perform.

People kept commenting that she sold her soul, or sold out for $750,000.00.  When I saw that amount, I thought it a bit absurd and excessive for an Inaugural Performance.  And if it wasn’t for the interview she’d done with Billboard clearing that up, I wouldn’t have know I was on to something.  Chrisette admits in her interview she was paid, just not that much and left it at that.

I’ll start by saying that I have a lot of activists, a lot of people who are Black Panthers, in my family, I’ve got a lot of people who marched, and watching these marches and watching the older people in my family have to experience [these times] was, for lack of a better word, traumatizing

She also went onto say that her family had disowned her because of her decision to perform for Trump and went into depth about her thoughts surrounding her decision to perform.

“Originally I was supposed to perform directly after his first speech, and I had done that with Barack Obama before, so I was used to that kind of experience. And the woman who organized the event came and told me, “Now you’re going to go first and he’s going to go after you.” I looked her in the eye and said, “My family has disowned me. If you decide to Google me, you’ll see that America is writing about me in their newspapers. I’m the black poster child for discord right now, and he’s not going to shake my hand?” So no, I didn’t get to meet him.”

I think it’s sad that as an American, that she’d be criticized for choosing to perform for her Country.  So you don’t like Trump, what does that have to do with her participating in celebrating our Democracy?  Who care’s she got paid for it, so did several other people.  Just because she made a choice, you’ve might not had doesn’t make her less Black or American than anyone.  And for her family to disown her, is it really that serious?  How do you let politics tear your family apart? That’s insane to me.  There’s one thing that’s for sure, her family will need Chrisette more than she’ll need them one day!
